Issue 139: How to Ruin Your Thanksgiving - Thanksgiving Trading

How to Ruin Your Thanksgiving

Hey Traders! Here’s what we’re covering today:

  • Why Trading During Thanksgiving Week is Never a Good Idea
  • A Thanksgiving Trading Nightmare
  • Buy Turkey Puts Before Thanksgiving Week

Many traders don’t realize how difficult It can be to break away from your trading routine, but it's important to take some time for yourself. There's no need to worry about missed opportunities; the market will still be there when you get back.

The stock market is ultra-slow Thanksgiving week as everyone takes time off for the holiday.

But just because the market is slow, doesn't mean it can't make some vicious moves.

In fact, because liquidity is far less than average historical liquidity, the market can be even more dangerous this week.

That's why it's so important to have the discipline and the confidence to not trade when the market is clearly not in your favor.

Let me tell you about two outstanding traders that worked with me.

Jake and Tom were two of the most successful traders at their firm. They prided themselves on their ability to make money in any market conditions, and they loved the challenge of trading during Thanksgiving week.

But back in 2003, the market moved big time, and Jake and Tom were forced to manage their positions. They missed the entire Thanksgiving week with their families, and they swore never to trade during that week again.

The lesson they learned was that no matter how much edge you think you have during Thanksgiving week, there is always the potential for a big move that can wipe out your profits (or even cause losses). So if you're thinking about trading during this dangerous week, remember what happened to Jake and Tom – it's not worth risking your money just to miss out on some turkey!

You should do the same.

Turn off your screens, step away from the options chain, and enjoy your holiday.

Then come back after Thanksgiving week, ready to take on the markets.

Remember, the professionals are not trading during Thanksgiving. They're taking the time off to relax and spend time with their families.

$TUR – TRADE IDEA UPDATE

The FEB 24 Puts look good to me for these reasons:

  • Plenty of time for the trade to work itself out
  • Volatility is fairly reasonable at 42% for 93 days
  • Downside portfolio deltas

Follow along, or better yet – join the Masters in Trading Community and follow the $TUR trade with a supportive trading community.

Trade Idea:  Consider Buying the $24 strike puts for $.55 or so.  Traders will want to hold this trade until expiration or until they can lock in a nice profit.
